Women’s Health Checks by Age: A Guide for Your 20s, 30s, 40s and Beyond

Health Hub · Women’s Health

The health checks that matter most change with every decade — contraception and cervical screening in your 20s, fertility and antenatal care in your 30s, breast screening and perimenopause in your 40s and beyond. This guide sets out what is worth booking at each stage, what each check involves, and which of them are bulk billed at Main Street Medical Centre in Hervey Bay.

From first cervical screening to menopause care, the checks worth booking change with each decade.

In your 20s: screening starts, contraception sorted

  • ✓Cervical screening from age 25. The Cervical Screening Test replaced the old two-yearly Pap smear and, for routine screening when you have no symptoms, is usually needed every five years. Your GP may recommend earlier follow-up after some results, and symptoms such as unusual bleeding or pain should be checked at any time rather than waiting for your next screen. You can now choose to self-collect your own sample behind a privacy screen — it is just as accurate as a clinician-collected sample.
  • ✓Contraception that suits your life. Options range from the pill to long-acting choices such as the Implanon arm implant and hormonal or copper IUDs, which are inserted here in the practice.
  • ✓Sexual health screening. Simple, confidential testing — most STIs are easily treated once found.
  • ✓Skin, mood and general health. Queensland skin deserves attention from your 20s, and a GP is also the right first stop for mood, sleep, periods and weight concerns.

In your 30s: fertility, pregnancy and busy-life health

  • ✓Preconception and fertility advice. Ideally book before trying to conceive — folate, immunisation status, medications and cycle tracking are all covered in one visit.
  • ✓Antenatal shared care. The practice provides shared antenatal care with Hervey Bay Hospital for low-risk pregnancies, so most of your routine visits stay with a GP you know.
  • ✓Postnatal checks. A six-week postnatal review covers your recovery, mood screening and contraception planning.
  • ✓Keep the five-yearly cervical screening cycle going — it is easy to lose track of in a busy decade.

In your 40s: the prevention decade

  • ✓45–49 health assessment. A bulk billed, once-off health assessment for people at risk of developing a chronic condition — blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes risk, weight and lifestyle in one structured visit.
  • ✓Breast awareness and screening. Free BreastScreen Queensland mammograms are available from age 40, with routine two-yearly invitations from 50. No referral is needed, and any new breast change should be examined by a GP promptly regardless of your last mammogram.
  • ✓Perimenopause symptoms. Irregular cycles, poor sleep, hot flushes and mood changes often start years before periods stop — they are treatable, so raise them early.
  • ✓Bowel screening from 45. The free national home-test kit is now available from age 45 — request your first kit, then it arrives by mail every two years.

Your 50s and beyond: menopause and staying strong

Menopause care is not one-size-fits-all. At Main Street Medical Centre it starts with a proper assessment of your symptoms and personal risks, then a plan that may include menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), non-hormonal options, or both — reviewed over time rather than set and forgotten. Bone health becomes part of the conversation too, including bone density scanning where indicated.

  • ✓Continue BreastScreen mammograms every two years to 74, cervical screening every five years to 74, and two-yearly bowel screening kits to 74.
  • ✓Heart health checks. Blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes risk deserve a scheduled review, not an ad-hoc one.
  • ✓Regular skin checks. Two in three Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer by 70, and how often you need a check depends on your individual risk — a bulk billed full skin check takes about 20 minutes.
  • ✓A 75+ health assessment when the time comes — a comprehensive, bulk billed yearly review of health, medications, mobility and independence.

Booking with a female GP in Hervey Bay

Many women prefer a female doctor for cervical screening, contraception and menopause consultations, and you can simply ask for one when booking. Dr Padma Kaki (FRACGP, DRANZCOG) provides IUD insertions and shared antenatal care, and Dr Ramani Poonehela has a special interest in women’s hormonal health, including menopause and PCOS. Our guide to seeing a female GP in Hervey Bay covers who does what and what it costs.

Standard consultations, cervical screening and contraception advice are bulk billed for eligible Medicare card holders. Some procedures carry a private fee — an iron infusion, for example, is $250 — and you will always be told the cost before anything is booked. Full details are on the women’s health page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask for a female GP?
Yes — just ask when you book, online or by phone. Several female GPs consult at the practice across the week.
Is the cervical screening self-collection option as reliable?
Yes. Self-collection detects HPV with the same accuracy as a clinician-collected sample, and is now an option for everyone due for screening. You collect the sample yourself in private at the practice, with your GP or nurse on hand if you have questions.
Do I need a referral for a mammogram?
No referral is needed for a free BreastScreen Queensland screening mammogram if you are 40 or over with no breast symptoms. If you have found a lump or any breast change, see your GP first — that needs proper assessment rather than a routine screen.
When should I see a GP about menopause?
As soon as symptoms bother you — there is no need to wait until periods have stopped completely. Sleep problems, hot flushes, mood changes and irregular cycles from your mid-40s onwards are all worth a dedicated appointment.
Are IUD insertions done at the practice?
Yes. Hormonal and copper IUD insertions and removals are performed on site — our IUD questions guide covers what to expect, and the consultation is bulk billed with a valid Medicare card.
