Convenient video consultations from home – bulk billed with Medicare

Telehealth Consultations

Telehealth Eligibility for Hervey Bay PatientsPatients must have an established care history with our practice, meaning they must have attended an in-person appointment within the last 12 months, or be registered with our practice through MyMedicare, to meet Medicare eligibility criteria for telehealth (some exemptions apply — ask reception). If eligible, telehealth consultations are bulk billed. This is a convenient option for patients across the Fraser Coast – including Point Vernon, Eli Waters, Scarness, and Torquay – who need follow-up care or ongoing management.

MyMedicare Registration

About MyMedicareMyMedicare is a free, voluntary registration that links you to your regular practice. You do not need to be registered to have a Mental Health Treatment Plan — it can be prepared by your usual GP, or by any GP at the practice you are registered with. Registration does unlock some extra Medicare items (for example longer telehealth consultations and additional chronic-condition support) and makes telehealth eligibility simpler. If you see a GP at Main Street Medical Centre regularly, we encourage you to register via myGov or speak with our reception team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Main Street Medical Centre a bulk billing practice?

Yes. We bulk bill all standard GP consultations for patients with a valid Medicare card. This includes general consultations, skin cancer checks, chronic disease management, mental health plans, immunisations, and more. Skin surgery and certain non-Medicare services attract an out-of-pocket fee – these are detailed on this page.

Why can’t you tell me the exact cost for skin surgery upfront?

The final Medicare item number depends on the histopathology (lab) results, which determine whether the lesion is benign, BCC/SCC, or melanoma. Different diagnoses attract different item numbers and rebates. We provide estimates, and final costs are confirmed approximately 3 weeks after your procedure.

When do I pay for skin surgery?

Full payment is required once item numbers are confirmed after histopathology results. We then process your Medicare rebate electronically, and it is deposited to your bank within 3–4 business days.

Are skin cancer checks bulk billed?

Yes. Both full body skin checks and spot checks are bulk billed for Medicare cardholders. You only pay out-of-pocket if a surgical procedure such as a biopsy or excision is required.

How much does the OptimaScan total body photography cost?

OptimaScan 3D total body photography is a private service. The introductory price is $49 until 31 December 2026, then $99 from 1 January 2027. It is not claimable through Medicare, is not bulk billed, and no GST applies. The scan creates a 3D head-to-toe digital baseline of your skin, helping your GP monitor changes over time. Your skin check consultation with the GP remains bulk billed for eligible Medicare card holders – the OptimaScan fee covers the imaging only.

Why is ear microsuction not fully covered by Medicare?

While the consultation is bulk billed, the microsuction procedure itself is classified as a private service by Medicare. Our $75 per ear fee covers the procedure only. We use microsuction, performed under direct vision – performed under direct vision with gentle suction rather than water pressure.

What if I don’t have a Medicare card?

Patients without a valid Medicare card pay $89 for a standard consultation. International visitors or those awaiting Medicare may be eligible for reciprocal healthcare arrangements – please ask our reception team on (07) 4325 4000.

Can I claim on private health insurance?

Private health insurance typically does not cover GP services, but some procedures may be claimable. We provide itemised receipts for private health or employer reimbursement where applicable.

Do you offer same-day appointments?

Yes. We accommodate same-day appointments for urgent needs wherever possible. You can book online or call us on (07) 4325 4000. Our practice is conveniently located at 71 Main Street, Pialba with free off-street parking.
