From 1 July 2026, the free pneumococcal vaccine (Capvaxive) is available under the National Immunisation Program for all adults from 65 years of age — and from 25 years for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults — as well as for people with certain medical risk conditions. If you had a pneumococcal vaccine before July 2026, ask your GP whether a further dose is now recommended. FluMist is a live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) given as a gentle spray into both nostrils — no needles required. It is TGA-approved for children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 years. In 2026 Queensland Health offered it free to children aged 2 to 5 (and to 6 to 17 year olds who struggle with needles), but the 2026 program ended on 7 August 2026 when all available FluMist stock expired, so the nasal spray is not currently available. Children can still receive the injectable flu vaccine (NIP funded for those aged six months to under five years), and our GPs can let you know if the nasal spray returns for the 2027 season. Children with certain medical conditions, including severe immunocompromise or active asthma, may be recommended the injectable vaccine instead. Our GPs will advise on the best option for your child.
All influenza vaccines available in Australia in 2026 are trivalent, containing two influenza A strains and one B strain (Victoria lineage). Previously, Australia used quadrivalent vaccines that included two B lineages. The B/Yamagata lineage has been removed because it has not been detected in circulation globally since March 2020. The 2026 formulation also includes two new A strains compared to 2025. Additionally, the adjuvanted vaccine Fluad is now registered for adults aged 50 years and over, though NIP funding remains for those 65 and over.
