Why Childhood Immunisation Matters

Childhood immunisation in Hervey Bay is essential for protecting your child against serious diseases such as whooping cough, measles, and meningococcal infection. At Main Street Medical Centre in Pialba, we administer routine childhood vaccines on the National Immunisation Program (NIP) schedule and can also organise catch-up doses when needed.

Vaccines train the immune system to recognise and respond to infections. Different vaccines work in different ways, and vaccination helps reduce the risk of serious illness. When high numbers of children in the Fraser Coast community are vaccinated, we achieve herd immunity, which helps protect vulnerable individuals who cannot be vaccinated, including newborns and those with certain medical conditions. All childhood vaccinations administered at our clinic are recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR), so you can access your child’s immunisation history through your myGov account.
Queensland Childcare Enrolment RequirementsChildcare services may require evidence that your child’s immunisations are up to date. Our team can help you obtain an Immunisation History Statement from the AIR for enrolment. Need a catch-up plan? We can help.

Additional pneumococcal doses and NIP meningococcal B vaccination apply to eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and children with specified medical risk conditions. Our GPs check the appropriate schedule.

Queensland also funds meningococcal B (Bexsero) for eligible Queensland infants aged six weeks to under 12 months, catch-up for children aged 12 months to under two years, and adolescents aged 15 to under 20 years. This state program does not require Medicare eligibility. Previous doses affect what is needed. Read the Queensland meningococcal B program or ask your GP.

Queensland Nasal Spray Flu Program for Children

The Queensland Nasal Spray Flu Immunisation Program offered a free, needle-free influenza vaccine (FluMist) in 2026 for children aged 2 to 5 years and for children aged 6 to 17 years who find needles difficult. That program ended on 7 August 2026, when all available FluMist stock expired, so the nasal spray is not currently available.

Children can still receive the injectable flu vaccine (NIP funded for those aged six months to under five years), and our GPs can let you know if the nasal spray returns for the 2027 season. The Queensland Free Flu Vaccination Program, which offered a free flu vaccine to all Queenslanders aged 6 months and over, ran from 1 March to 30 September 2026 and has now closed. With a Medicare card the vaccination consultation is bulk billed; patients without Medicare pay our standard $89 consultation fee. Seasonal vaccine supplies can vary, so call (07) 4325 4000 to check current availability before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about childhood immunisation in Hervey Bay.

Are childhood vaccinations free at Main Street Medical Centre?

NIP vaccines are free for eligible children who have a Medicare card or are eligible for one. Our vaccination consultation is bulk billed for eligible Medicare patients. Patients without Medicare eligibility may need to pay for the vaccine as well as our standard $89 consultation fee. State-funded programs can have different rules; reception will confirm eligibility and any charges before booking.

What if my child has missed vaccinations?

We offer catch-up immunisation schedules for children and adolescents who have missed doses. Funded catch-up is available for most vaccines for people under 20, and HPV catch-up is available up to and including age 25. Book an appointment and bring any previous immunisation records so our GP can create a personalised catch-up plan.

How do I get an Immunisation History Statement for childcare?

For children under 14, you can use myGov linked to Medicare to obtain their Immunisation History Statement. Children aged 14 or over generally need to obtain their own statement, or consent to a parent accessing it. Ask us for help or see Services Australia’s access instructions.

Can I book multiple children for vaccination at the same appointment?

Yes. We encourage families to book siblings together to save time. Please let us know when booking if you need vaccinations for multiple children so we can allocate sufficient appointment time.

What is the needle-free nasal flu spray and is my child eligible?

The nasal spray flu vaccine (FluMist) was offered free through the Queensland Nasal Spray Flu Immunisation Program in 2026 for children aged 2 to 5 years and for 6 to 17 year olds who struggle with needles. That program ended on 7 August 2026 when the available stock expired, so the nasal spray is not currently available. Children can still have the injectable flu vaccine (NIP funded for those aged six months to under five years) — call (07) 4325 4000 to book, or ask your GP about nasal spray availability for the 2027 season.

What should I do if my child has a reaction after vaccination?

Mild reactions such as a sore injection site, low-grade fever or irritability are common and usually settle within a few days. For difficulty breathing or a suspected severe allergic reaction, call 000 immediately. Seek medical advice promptly for symptoms that are severe, unusual or worrying, including persistent crying or high fever. See the Australian Government vaccine side-effect advice.
