About the JYNNEOS Mpox Vaccine
The JYNNEOS vaccine is a third-generation smallpox and Mpox vaccine that contains a live, non-replicating virus. This means the vaccine cannot cause Mpox infection. JYNNEOS has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use in Australia and is recommended by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) for individuals at increased risk of Mpox.
The vaccine works by stimulating your immune system to produce antibodies against the Mpox virus. These antibodies help protect you from infection or reduce the severity of illness if you are exposed to the virus.
Mpox Vaccination Schedule
| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Primary Series | 2-dose primary course for eligible people; vaccination reduces risk but does not guarantee protection |
| Dose Interval | 28 days (4 weeks) minimum between doses |
| Administration Route | Subcutaneous injection (preferred for under 18s or those with keloid scarring history) |
| Protection Onset | Approximately 2 weeks after the second dose |
| Cost | Vaccine free for eligible groups. Consultation bulk billed with Medicare; fee applies without Medicare. |
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) for Mpox
If you believe you have been exposed to Mpox, contact us as soon as possible — do not wait until day four. The JYNNEOS vaccine can be used as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to reduce your risk of developing the infection, and it works best the sooner it is given. If you have symptoms (a new rash, sores, fever or swollen glands), please phone before attending so we can arrange to see you safely and avoid exposing others in the waiting room. The effectiveness of PEP depends on how quickly you receive the vaccine after exposure:
- Within 4 days of exposure: May prevent infection entirely
- Within 4–14 days of exposure: May reduce the severity of illness
If you think you may have been exposed to Mpox, please contact Main Street Medical Centre on (07) 4325 4000 to arrange a priority consultation. Our GPs can assess your situation and provide appropriate guidance and vaccination if indicated.
