Cardiovascular Care

Heart Health Checks for Hervey Bay Men

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death among Australian men. A Heart Health Check is a Medicare-subsidised cardiovascular risk assessment designed for patients aged 30 and over who have not been previously diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. During the assessment, your GP will evaluate key risk factors including blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood glucose, family history and lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet and physical activity. Using the Australian absolute cardiovascular disease risk calculator, your doctor can determine your five-year risk profile and recommend appropriate interventions. It is worth noting that erectile dysfunction can sometimes be associated with underlying cardiovascular risk factors. Raising this with your GP during a heart health check can be an important step in a broader vascular health assessment. For more information, visit the Heart Foundation of Australia.

Prostate Screening

Prostate Health Screening & Informed Decision Making

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among Australian men. While there is no universal screening program, current guidelines recommend that men aged 50 to 69 discuss the benefits and limitations of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing with their GP. For men with a family history of prostate cancer, conversations about screening are generally recommended from age 40 to 45. A PSA test is a simple blood test that measures a protein produced by the prostate. If results are outside the expected range for your age, your GP will discuss the next steps, which may include further monitoring, referral for multiparametric MRI, or specialist urological review. Our GPs take an informed decision-making approach, ensuring you understand the benefits and limitations of each option — including active surveillance and watchful waiting — so you can make the choice that is right for your circumstances. If ongoing management is needed, a GP chronic disease management plan can help coordinate your care.
PSA Testing — What to Know
Who should consider it: Men aged 50–69, or from 40–45 if you have a family history of prostate cancer (father, brother). Your GP can help you decide. What the test can and cannot tell you: A raised PSA level does not mean you have cancer — it indicates further investigation may be warranted. Some cancers do not raise PSA levels. Your GP will explain what results mean in your context. What happens next if results are raised: Your GP may recommend repeat testing in a few weeks, referral for multiparametric MRI, or specialist urological review. The decision about next steps is always made together.
Ongoing Care

Common Health Concerns We Manage for Fraser Coast Men

Many conditions affecting men’s health Hervey Bay patients face are manageable with early detection, regular GP involvement and coordinated care across the wider Fraser Coast region.

Joint Pain & Arthritis

Arthritis and musculoskeletal pain are among the most common reasons men visit their GP. Our doctors can assess joint function, recommend evidence-based management strategies, refer for imaging or physiotherapy, and help you stay active with a plan tailored to your lifestyle and physical demands.

Heart Disease Risk Factors

Elevated blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose are key modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. A Medicare-subsidised Heart Health Check can identify your absolute risk level, and your GP can develop a management plan including lifestyle modification and medication where appropriate.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is increasingly prevalent among Australian men, particularly those with a family history, excess weight, or a sedentary lifestyle. Your GP can arrange screening blood tests, provide dietary and exercise guidance, initiate treatment, and coordinate ongoing care through a GP chronic condition management plan with allied health support.

Lung Health & Respiratory Concerns

Smoking, vaping, occupational exposure and conditions such as asthma and COPD require ongoing GP management. Our doctors can assess respiratory symptoms, arrange investigations, support smoking cessation, and coordinate specialist referrals where needed. From 1 July 2025, eligible patients aged 50–70 with a significant smoking history (30+ pack-years, currently smoking or quit within the last 10 years) may qualify for the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) — a bulk-billed low-dose CT scan to check for early lung changes. Your GP assesses eligibility and issues the referral.

Bowel Cancer Screening

Bowel cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Australian men. The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program sends free home test kits to Australians aged 45 to 74, mailed every two years from age 50. If you are 45 to 49 you can request your first kit. Your GP can help you use the kit, explain your result and arrange a colonoscopy referral if follow-up is needed.

45–49 Year Health Check

A one-off, Medicare-subsidised health assessment (MBS items 701 to 707) for patients aged 45 to 49 who are at risk of developing a chronic condition. Your GP reviews blood pressure, weight, family history, activity and mental health, then builds a practical prevention plan. Bulk billed for eligible Medicare card holders.
Mental Health & Community

Support for Mind, Body & Connection

Many men in regional communities delay seeking support for mental health concerns. Our men’s health Hervey Bay GPs provide confidential, judgement-free consultations and can connect you with local support services.
Medicare Rebated

Mental Health Treatment Plans

Your GP can prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan that may provide eligible patients with Medicare rebates for sessions with a psychologist. Under the current Better Access arrangements, eligible patients can access up to 10 rebated individual sessions each calendar year. The number of rebated sessions and any out-of-pocket costs depend on your eligibility and the provider you see. This can reduce the financial barrier to professional support for anxiety, depression, stress and other concerns.
Local Resource

Hervey Bay Men’s Shed

The local Men’s Shed in the Nikenbah area provides a supportive environment for social connection, skill-sharing and purposeful activity — particularly valuable for men transitioning to retirement or experiencing social isolation. Contact them directly for current meeting times and location.

Men’s Walk & Talk Groups

Community walk-and-talk groups along the Hervey Bay foreshore combine light physical activity with peer support. Your GP may recommend community-based activities like this as part of a broader wellbeing plan. Ask at reception for current local group details.

Common Questions

Men’s Health FAQ

What age should I start having regular men’s health checks?

There is no single starting age — it depends on your family history, lifestyle and individual risk factors. As a general guide, men from age 30 may be eligible for a Medicare-subsidised Heart Health Check, and men aged 50 to 69 should discuss prostate screening with their GP. If you have a family history of prostate cancer, heart disease or bowel cancer, earlier screening may be recommended. Book a men’s health check Hervey Bay appointment with your GP to determine the right screening schedule for you.

Are men’s health consultations confidential?

Yes. All consultations at Main Street Medical Centre are confidential. Whether you are discussing sexual health, mental health, or any other concern, your information is protected by medical privacy laws and our practice’s strict confidentiality protocols.

Do you bulk bill men’s health appointments?

We bulk bill eligible Medicare card holders, concession card holders, children under 16, and DVA Gold Card holders for standard GP consultations, including men’s health checks. Heart Health Checks, Mental Health Treatment Plans, and chronic disease management plans are also bulk billed for eligible patients. Some services such as skin cancer excisions, iron infusions and driver’s medicals have out-of-pocket costs — these are always discussed before you proceed. Visit our fees page for full details.

Can I request a male or female GP for my appointment?

Yes. If you are looking for a male GP Hervey Bay, our team includes Dr Yan Paing Oo, Dr Moe Thu, Dr Haseeb Ahmed and Dr Lachlan Davis — as well as experienced female GPs. You can select your preferred doctor when booking online or let reception know when you call.

What does a PSA test involve?

A PSA test is a simple blood test that measures levels of Prostate-Specific Antigen, a protein produced by the prostate gland. Your GP will discuss the potential benefits and limitations of the test with you before ordering it, as part of an informed decision-making process. If results are outside the expected range, your GP will explain the next steps, which may include repeat testing, referral for imaging, or specialist review.

How long does a men’s health appointment take?

A standard consultation is approximately 15 minutes. If you have multiple concerns to discuss or require a Heart Health Check, we recommend booking a long appointment (20–40 minutes). You can request this when booking online or by mentioning it to our reception team.
What is the National Lung Cancer Screening Program and am I eligible? The National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) offers eligible Australians a bulk-billed low-dose CT (LDCT) scan to check for early lung changes. To be eligible, you must be aged 50 to 70 years, have a smoking history of at least 30 pack-years (e.g. one pack a day for 30 years), and be currently smoking or have quit within the last 10 years, and have no current symptoms such as an unexplained cough or unexplained weight loss. Your GP assesses your eligibility and provides the referral. There is no out-of-pocket cost for eligible patients under this program.
What is the 45–49 year health check? The 45–49 year health check (MBS Items 701–707) is a Medicare-subsidised assessment available to patients aged 45 to 49 who have identifiable risk factors for developing a chronic condition — such as elevated blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, a family history of chronic disease, or physical inactivity. Your GP conducts a comprehensive lifestyle review, calculates your type 2 diabetes risk, and develops a preventive management plan. This check is bulk billed for eligible Medicare cardholders at Main Street Medical Centre.
