Your comfort during the procedure

Every removal procedure is performed under local anaesthetic — most people feel minimal discomfort once the area is numb. Our GPs use careful wound closure techniques that follow your skin's natural tension lines, aiming to support good healing and reduce scarring where possible. We understand many patients delay treatment due to anxiety about pain — our clinical protocols are designed specifically to address these concerns.

What We Remove — Cyst Removal Hervey Bay

Accurately identifying the nature of a skin lesion is the critical first step toward effective clinical management. As part of our cyst removal Hervey Bay service, we assess and treat several types of benign skin growths during a consultation:

Epidermoid Cysts (Sometimes Called 'Sebaceous' Cysts)

Slow-growing, non-cancerous lumps found under the skin, often on the face, neck or trunk. They typically contain keratin (a soft, cheese-like material) and can become painful or inflamed if they rupture or become infected. Clinical removal is recommended if they grow larger, become persistently infected, or cause discomfort.

Skin Tags (Acrochordons)

Small, flesh-coloured or slightly darker growths that hang off the skin's surface on a thin stalk. They commonly appear in areas where skin rubs together — the neck, underarms, groin, or under the breasts. While harmless, removal is often requested when they catch on clothing or jewellery, or for cosmetic reasons.

Lipomas

Soft, fatty lumps situated between the skin and underlying muscle layer. They feel doughy to touch and move easily when pressed. Most lipomas are small and can be removed on-site; however, larger or deeper lipomas may require referral for specialist management.

Other Benign Lesions

Our GPs also assess and manage other benign skin conditions including seborrhoeic keratoses, dermatofibromas, and milia. If any lesion appears suspicious during examination, we may recommend a skin biopsy to confirm the diagnosis before proceeding with removal.

Removal Methods We Use

The appropriate removal technique depends on the type, size and location of your lesion. When booking cyst removal Hervey Bay patients can trust our GPs to select the method best suited to the lesion and the area of skin involved:

Surgical Excision

Complete removal of the lesion using a scalpel, followed by suturing. This is the preferred method for cysts and lipomas as it removes the entire structure (including the capsule), reducing the likelihood of recurrence. Stitches are typically removed 7–14 days after the procedure.

Snip Excision

Quick removal of skin tags using sterile surgical scissors. This technique is ideal for small to medium skin tags and typically heals rapidly without the need for sutures.

Cryotherapy (Freezing)

Application of liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy small skin tags. This non-surgical option is suitable for very small, superficial lesions. Learn more about our cryotherapy services.

Electrosurgery

Use of a small electrical current to remove skin tags and cauterise the base. This method can reduce bleeding and is effective for multiple small lesions.

Your GP will recommend the most appropriate removal method during your initial consultation.

Your Clinical Pathway: What to Expect

1
Initial Consultation & Assessment

Your GP will examine the lesion to confirm it is benign and discuss your treatment options. This initial consultation is bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card (eligibility criteria apply). If there is any clinical doubt about the nature of the lesion, we may recommend sending a sample to a pathology provider such as Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology (SNP) for histological analysis before or after removal.

2
The Procedure

The treatment area is cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic. Skin tag removal is typically very quick (a few minutes). Cyst or lipoma removal generally takes 20–30 minutes depending on size and location. All procedures are performed in our dedicated surgery room and maintain clinical sterility.

3
Post-Procedure Care

You will receive a comprehensive wound care kit and written aftercare instructions from our nursing team. For procedures requiring sutures, you'll return for a follow-up appointment in 7–14 days to have your stitches removed and ensure proper healing.

4
Pathology Results (If Applicable)

If your lesion was sent for histological examination, our pathology provider (e.g., Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology) will process the sample and return results to us. Your GP will contact you to discuss the findings and any further recommendations.

Ready to get started? Book an assessment – where a lesion is straightforward and time allows, removal can sometimes be done at the same visit; otherwise a short procedure appointment is arranged.

How to Prepare for Your Procedure

To support a good clinical outcome for your cyst removal Hervey Bay appointment, please follow these preparation guidelines:

1
Clean Skin: Shower on the day of your procedure and avoid applying body lotions, perfumes, or oils to the area being treated. Clean skin reduces infection risk.
2
Remove Makeup: For facial procedures, please arrive with clean skin. Foundation or concealer can mask skin texture and affect clinical assessment.
3
Wear Comfortable Clothing: Choose loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the lesion site. A clinical gown will be provided if needed for your comfort and privacy.
4
Medications: Continue taking your regular medications unless otherwise advised. If you take blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin or warfarin), please inform your doctor during your consultation so they can provide specific guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cyst or skin tag removal painful?
All removal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic, which numbs the treatment area. While the initial anaesthetic injection may sting briefly (similar to a small insect bite), most people feel minimal discomfort during the actual removal process. Our GPs are experienced in administering local anaesthetic gently to minimise discomfort.
Will I have a scar after removal?
Some degree of scarring is normal after any surgical procedure. However, our GPs use careful wound closure techniques that follow your skin's natural tension lines to help reduce visible scarring. The final appearance of your scar depends on factors including the size and location of the lesion, your skin type, and how well you care for the wound during healing. Most scars continue to fade over 6–12 months.
Will my cyst or skin tag grow back?
When a cyst is completely removed (including its capsule), it is unlikely to recur in the same location. However, you may develop new cysts elsewhere. Similarly, once a skin tag is professionally removed, it typically does not regrow in that exact spot — though patients prone to skin tags may develop new ones in other areas over time.
How long is the recovery time?
Recovery time varies depending on the procedure. Skin tag removal typically heals within a few days. For cyst or lipoma removal with sutures, we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise and keeping the area dry for 7–14 days until your follow-up appointment. Most patients return to normal daily activities immediately, with only minor restrictions on physical activity.
Do I need a referral for cyst removal?
No. In most cases, you do not need a referral from another doctor to have a cyst or skin tag assessed and removed by our GPs. For cyst removal Hervey Bay patients can book directly with one of our skin-trained doctors. If your lesion is particularly large, deep, or in a complex location, we will discuss whether a referral may be more appropriate.
Is cyst and skin tag removal covered by Medicare?
At Main Street Medical Centre, skin checks are bulk billed for anyone with a valid Medicare card. However, skin procedures (including cyst and skin tag removal) attract an out-of-pocket fee that varies by complexity and size. Concession card holders receive discounted rates. DVA Gold card holders are bulk billed for all services. Please visit our fees page or call reception on (07) 4325 4000 for an estimate.
Can you remove a cyst that is infected?
If your cyst is currently infected (red, swollen, painful, or draining), your GP may first prescribe antibiotics and/or perform incision and drainage to treat the infection. Once the infection has resolved, complete surgical removal can be scheduled. Removing an actively infected cyst increases the risk of complications and incomplete removal, so treatment of the infection first leads to better outcomes.
When should I seek urgent review for a skin lump?
While most lumps and bumps are harmless, some signs warrant prompt medical assessment. See your GP as soon as possible if a lump is growing rapidly, becoming increasingly painful, or appears alongside fever or red streaks spreading from the area. A lesion that bleeds, ulcerates, or changes colour (especially if it becomes darker or develops irregular pigmentation) should also be assessed promptly. If you are unsure, it is always better to have a lump checked early rather than wait.
