Skin cancer surgery is the removal of a skin cancer, or a suspicious spot, so it can be treated and sent for testing. At Main Street Medical Centre in Pialba, skin cancer surgery and excisions are performed by our own GPs in dedicated, purpose-set-up surgery rooms on-site. Our skin team is led by Dr Nadeesh Seneviratne (Master of Medicine in Skin Cancer Medicine, University of Queensland), with Dr Moe Thu, Dr Haseeb Ahmed and other GPs with a special interest and substantial experience in skin cancer medicine. You do not need to travel out of Hervey Bay for most skin cancer surgery.

Dedicated skin surgery rooms, right here in Pialba

We have dedicated surgery rooms at 71 Main Street so minor skin surgery can be carried out on-site, by a GP you have already met, in a room equipped for the procedure. Having the rooms here means shorter waits, care that stays with your regular practice, and, where the lesion is suitable, the option to have a spot excised on the same visit as your skin check.

What skin cancer surgery involves

Skin cancer surgery at our Pialba clinic is minor surgery, usually done under local anaesthetic while you are awake. The area is numbed, the lesion and a margin of surrounding skin are removed, and the wound is closed with stitches. What comes out is sent to a pathology laboratory so it can be examined and confirmed. Most procedures take under an hour, and you go home the same day.

  • The skin around the spot is numbed with local anaesthetic.
  • Your GP removes the lesion, along with a margin of normal-looking skin.
  • The wound is closed with sutures; larger sites may need a flap or graft.
  • The sample is sent for pathology to confirm what it is and whether the margins are clear.
  • You are given wound-care instructions and a follow-up plan to discuss the results.

From skin check to surgery, in one place

Skin cancer surgery usually follows a full skin check and, where needed, a skin biopsy to find out what a spot is. Because our GPs handle the check, the diagnosis and the surgery, your care stays under one roof. We also offer mole mapping with OptimaScan 3D total body photography to help track your skin over time, and cryotherapy for some sun spots. For the full range, see our skin cancer services.

Frequently asked questions about skin cancer surgery in Hervey Bay

How much does skin cancer surgery cost in Hervey Bay?

Your consultation is bulk billed for eligible Medicare card holders. The surgery itself attracts a Medicare rebate, but there is an out-of-pocket gap because the rebate does not cover the full cost of the procedure. The fee depends on the size and site of the lesion and the type of repair needed. Exact amounts are set out on our Hervey Bay GP fees page, and your GP will explain the cost before any surgery goes ahead.

Do I need a referral for skin cancer surgery?

No referral is needed for our GPs to assess a spot or carry out minor skin surgery. You can book a skin check online or call reception on (07) 4325 4000. If a lesion needs specialist input, your GP will arrange the appropriate referral.

Can a skin cancer be removed on the same day as my skin check?

Sometimes. If a spot is straightforward and suitable, your GP may be able to excise it during the same visit. More often, surgery is booked for a separate short appointment so the right time and setup can be arranged. Your GP will talk you through what suits your spot.

Who performs the surgery?

Skin cancer surgery and excisions are performed by our own GPs with a special interest and substantial experience in skin cancer medicine, in our dedicated surgery rooms. Our skin team is led by Dr Nadeesh Seneviratne (Master of Medicine in Skin Cancer Medicine).

What happens after the surgery?

You go home the same day with wound-care instructions. The removed tissue is sent to pathology, and your GP reviews the results with you at a follow-up appointment to confirm the diagnosis, check the margins, and plan any further care or skin monitoring.

Skin cancer is common in Queensland, and early treatment matters. For general information on skin cancer and its treatment, see the Cancer Council’s skin cancer information.
