Hormonal or copper?

IUDs are small devices placed inside the uterus. Both are long-acting, reversible contraception. The right choice depends on your circumstances.

Hormonal IUD

Releases a progestogen hormone. Discuss the available devices, possible changes to bleeding and other side effects with your GP.

Copper IUD

Does not release hormones. Periods may become heavier or more painful. Call reception to arrange a consultation about this option.

IUDs do not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Read Healthdirect’s IUD information →

IUD Insertion Hervey Bay: Understanding Your Options

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped device placed inside the uterus that provides long-acting, reversible contraception. IUDs are “set and forget”—no daily pills and no regular injections—making them one of the most reliable contraceptive options available.

Hormonal IUDsBulk Billed*

Levonorgestrel-releasing IUDs providing effective contraception for up to 5–8 years

When considering an IUD in Hervey Bay, it helps to understand how hormonal IUDs work. They release a small amount of levonorgestrel (a type of progestogen) directly into the uterine cavity. Side effects can occur, and Dr Kaki will discuss what to expect and whether the option suits you. For more information, visit Healthdirect Australia.

Higher-dose devices may be recommended for the management of heavy menstrual bleeding, as many users experience lighter periods over time—a common reason patients choose this option for period management. Lower-dose devices have a smaller frame and may be particularly suitable for people who have not had children. Dr Kaki will discuss which device is most appropriate during your consultation.

Hormonal IUDs can also be used as the progestogen component of menopausal hormone therapy to protect the endometrium—this may be discussed as part of your women’s health care. For detailed information, visit Jean Hailes for Women’s Health.

Dr Padma Kaki (FRACGP, DRANZCOG) performs all IUD insertions at our Pialba practice. She holds a Diploma from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG). View profile →

Copper IUD Hervey Bay: Hormone-Free Contraception

Effective contraception for 5–10 years without any hormones

Copper IUDs provide effective contraception without any hormones. These devices continuously release copper ions into the uterine and tubal fluids, creating an environment that impairs sperm function and prevents fertilisation. Because they contain no hormones, copper IUDs do not affect ovulation or your natural menstrual cycle.

If you’re considering a copper IUD in Hervey Bay, appointments are available with Dr Kaki at our Pialba clinic. They are an excellent choice for people who prefer hormone-free contraception, have contraindications to hormonal methods, or wish to maintain their natural cycle. More information is available from True Relationships and Reproductive Health.

A copper IUD may also be used for emergency contraception if inserted soon after unprotected intercourse. If you are considering this option, please contact the clinic promptly to discuss with Dr Kaki.

Important consideration: Copper IUDs may cause heavier, longer or more painful periods, particularly in the first 3–6 months. Dr Kaki will discuss whether this option is suitable based on your current menstrual patterns and medical history.

Pre-Insertion Assessment at Our Pialba Clinic

Your safety is our priority—thorough assessment before every procedure

Before an IUD insertion, you will attend a consultation with Dr Kaki where she will review your medical history, discuss your contraceptive goals, and ensure you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. This first appointment also gives you time to ask questions about pain relief, device costs and the insertion process.

STI Screening

Dr Kaki may recommend testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea before the procedure, particularly if under 25, with a new partner, or multiple partners. More from Queensland Health.

Cervical Screening

Dr Kaki will review your cervical screening history and check that your Cervical Screening Test is up to date. A screening test does not rule out every cervical condition, so any symptoms are assessed separately. Learn more about the National Cervical Screening Program.

Contraindications

IUD insertion may not be appropriate with suspected pregnancy, active pelvic infection, certain uterine abnormalities, or unexplained vaginal bleeding. Dr Kaki will conduct a thorough assessment.

What to Expect During IUD Insertion in Hervey Bay

A planned procedure, with preparation and pain relief discussed beforehand

IUD insertion is performed in a private, sterile environment at our Pialba clinic. A dedicated nurse will be present to provide support throughout, and Dr Kaki will ensure you feel comfortable and informed at every step.

The Insertion Process

  1. Bimanual examination — Dr Kaki performs a gentle internal examination to assess the position, size and shape of your uterus
  2. Speculum insertion — A sterile speculum allows the GP to visualise and clean your cervix with antiseptic solution
  3. Uterine sounding — A thin instrument measures the depth of your uterus (minimum 6 cm required for most IUDs)
  4. Device insertion — The IUD is loaded into a sterile tube, passed through the cervix, and positioned at the fundus
  5. String trimming — Fine threads are trimmed to 2–4 cm outside the cervix for future removal

Pain relief options: Dr Kaki may recommend appropriate pain relief before your procedure. Common options include over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication or paracetamol taken approximately one hour beforehand. Only take pain relief if it is safe for you—check with your GP or pharmacist if you have allergies, kidney disease, or are taking blood thinners.

For those with high anxiety or a history of painful procedures, additional options may be discussed including local anaesthetic applied to the cervix. A supportive nurse will be present throughout.

Understanding the risks: Like all medical procedures, IUD insertion carries some risks. These are uncommon but may include cramping, vasovagal response (feeling faint), infection (particularly in the first three weeks), expulsion, uterine perforation (very rare, ~1 in 1,000), and if pregnancy occurs, a higher chance it may be ectopic. Dr Kaki will discuss these during your consultation.

After Your IUD Insertion

Aftercare advice and follow-up tailored to your needs

Following your procedure, you will rest at the clinic for 15–20 minutes. It is recommended to have someone available to drive you home, particularly if you experience cramping or light-headedness.

First 48–72 Hours

Avoid vaginal intercourse, tampons and menstrual cups (use pads), swimming, baths and spas, and heavy exercise. Light spotting and cramping are normal.

When to Seek Help

Contact us on (07) 4325 4000 or attend Hervey Bay Hospital ED if you experience severe pelvic pain, fever, unusual discharge, heavy bleeding, or cannot feel your IUD strings.

Oral Contraceptive Pills

Combined (COCP) and progestogen-only (POP) options. Highly effective with perfect use but a typical-use failure rate of around 7% due to missed doses.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About IUD Hervey Bay

Can I have an IUD if I have never been pregnant?

Yes. IUDs can be suitable for people who have never been pregnant. Lower-dose hormonal devices are designed with a smaller frame and narrower insertion tube, which may be more comfortable during insertion. Dr Kaki will discuss the most appropriate option for you.

Will an IUD affect my future fertility?

There is no evidence that modern IUDs cause future infertility. Fertility usually returns quickly after IUD removal, though the timing can vary between individuals.

What about ectopic pregnancy risk?

While a pregnancy that occurs with an IUD in place is more likely to be ectopic, the overall risk of ectopic pregnancy is actually lower in IUD users than in those using no contraception. This is because IUDs are so effective at preventing all pregnancies.

Can I use an IUD after having a baby?

IUDs are an excellent option for postpartum contraception. Insertion is typically recommended at the 6-week postnatal check. Both hormonal and copper IUDs are safe while breastfeeding—the small amount of levonorgestrel released does not affect milk supply or infant development.

Where do I get the IUD device?

IUDs require a prescription. After your consultation, Dr Kaki will provide a script and you will purchase the device from a local pharmacy. Bring the unopened box to your appointment.

How do I book an IUD insertion Hervey Bay appointment?

IUD insertions at Main Street Medical Centre are performed by Dr Padma Kaki. Start with a pre-insertion consultation with Dr Kaki or call (07) 4325 4000. The insertion appointment is arranged separately after assessment. For a copper IUD, removal or replacement, call reception to choose the appropriate appointment.

Is contraception Hervey Bay bulk billed at your practice?

The consultation itself may be bulk billed for eligible Medicare card holders. The IUD device is purchased separately from a pharmacy with a prescription and is not covered by Medicare. Additional pathology costs may apply if clinically indicated. We will confirm all costs at your consultation. For details, visit our Fees & Medicare page.
