Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy (Freezing) for Skin Lesions & Warts

At Main Street Medical Centre & Skin Clinic, some skin conditions can be effectively treated by our experienced skin cancer doctors without the need for surgery. One of the most common treatments we offer is cryotherapy (freezing), a safe and effective method frequently used by our skin GPs.

What is Cryotherapy Used For?

Cryotherapy is commonly used to treat:

  • Viral warts (caused by the human papillomavirus)
  • Sun spots (actinic keratosis) and other superficial skin lesions

What to Expect from Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a quick, safe, and minimally invasive procedure that involves applying liquid nitrogen to the lesion for just a few seconds. While the treatment can cause brief discomfort, any pain is typically mild and short-lived.

After the procedure, the treated area may:

  • Become red and swollen
  • Develop a white spot from the freezing process
  • Form a blister within a few hours (a normal healing response)

Over the following days, the area will heal naturally. A scab may form and eventually fall off, revealing healthy new skin underneath. Keeping the area clean and covered with a simple dressing will help prevent irritation and promote healing.

If you have any concerns about your treatment or healing process, our friendly Registered Nurses are available to assist you.

Wart Treatment Duration

Because warts are caused by a virus, they often require multiple cryotherapy sessions for complete removal. The number of treatments needed will be determined by your skin doctor during your consultation.
